PROTEST GETS POLICE ATTENTION IN ONTARIO – UPDATED 11am
Police are beginning to take action to enforce an injunction aimed at clearing a rail blockade on Mohawk Territory near Belleville, Ont.
Members of the Ontario Provincial Police began moving to clear protesters who have shut down the key crossing for nearly three weeks, around 9 o’clock Atlantic time, this morning. The protestors have been halting freight and passenger rail traffic across most of eastern Canada for nearly three weeks. Police had warned demonstrators to clear the tracks or face arrest and the possibility of criminal charges. (Canadian Press)
PROVINCE LOOKING FOR INPUT ON SEPARATION LAWS AIMED AT PARENTS
The provincial government is inviting Nova Scotians to share their views on proposed changes to the province’s parenting and support laws. People can share their opinions starting today, through an online survey https://novascotia.ca/proposed-changes-to-the-parenting-and-support-act-consultation/ Planned changes to the Parenting and Support Act are aimed at aligning provincial laws with upcoming changes to federal legislation,
The Parenting and Support Act is the provincial law which deals with child and family matters in cases where parents are separating. When parents’ divorce, things like child support are then covered under the federal Divorce Act. You can make your comments online until March 4th.
THREE PEOPLE LEFT HOMELESS AFTER HOUSE FIRE IN PICTOU COUNTY
Three people have been left homeless after a fire that destroyed their house and belongings Friday afternoon on Scotsburn Road in West Branch. But luckily there are no serious injuries. The couple and a teenaged daughter are being helped by the Pictou County team of Red Cross volunteers with emergency lodging, food and other essentials.
Chester-St. Margaret’s MLA Hugh MacKay has resigned from the provincial Liberal caucus after he was recently charged with impaired driving for a second time. The charge was laid earlier this month in relation to an incident in the fall of 2018. His statement says he doesn’t take the charge lightly, so he’s resigning to represent his riding as an independent. Premier Stephen McNeil says he just learned of the impaired charge last week, and he supports MacKay’s resignation from the governing side of the house.
LOCAL COLDEST NIGHT OF THE YEAR EVENT A SUCCESS!
Congrats to all the organizers and participants in this year’s local Coldest Night of the Year – the event raised $47,608 for Pictou County Roots for Youth Society on Saturday!
The Pictou County Relay for Life announced over the weekend that they have 10 community members who have come together to form a Dream Team in celebration of the 15th anniversary. This is only the second time in the event’s history a Dream Team has been created – the first team was formed 10 years ago raising $78,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. Members of the 2020 team include, Shannon MacLean, Meryl Kerr-Polley, Jon Sim, Chief Andrea Paul, Brian Haines, Stacey Davidson-Murphy, Jason Conway, Jon Visser, Colin MacKinnon, and Susan Weeks. The Pictou County Relay for Life will be held on June 6, 2020 at North Nova Education Centre.

The Weeks Major Midgets picked up 2 big wins this weekend to eliminate Steel Subaru from the playoffs and advance to the next round, last night’s game 7 was a thriller with the Major Midgets winning 5-3.
NSFMMHL:
The Northern Subway Selects won 2 games this weekend to go up 2-0 in the series against the Bussey Auto Penguins. On Saturday they won 5-3 and on Sunday they picked up an 8-5 victory.

The Moncton Wildcats have won their 12th game in a row, defeating the Mooseheads 5-1 last night.
The Seadogs defeated the Huskies 3-2.
Curling:
Manitoba’s Kerri Einarson has won the Canadian women’s curling championship. Einarson downed Ontario’s Rachel Homan 8-7 on Sunday in final of the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
Also, a huge shoutout to Truro’s Karlee Burgess for winning the world junior women’s curling championship on Saturday. Karlee represented Canada on the Manitoba team skipped by Mackenzie Zacharias.
NBA:
The Raptors hammered the PAcers 127-81, this 46 point victory is the largest win in Raptors history.
The Milwaukee Bucks become the first team in the NBA to clinch a playoff spot with a 48-8 record. Earliest playoff clinch in NBA history.
NHL:
The Capitals take down the Penguins 5-3.
The Stars beat the Blackhawks 2-1.
Buffalo one upped Winnipeg 2-1.
The Islanders defeated the Sharks 4-1.
The Flames doubled the Red Wings 4-2.
The Blues beat the Wild 4-1.
Shea Theodore was the hero for Vegas as they beat the Ducks in OT 6-5.
The Oilers doubled the Kings 4-2.
